Ticketing platform AXS has implemented biometric authentication capabilities in its mobile app, enabling users to access their tickets using fingerprint or facial recognition instead of traditional passwords. This marks a significant advancement in ticketing security, following earlier biometric ticketing deployments like River Plate’s stadium system in Argentina.
The new feature, available in the latest version of the AXS mobile app, processes biometric data directly on users’ devices rather than storing it on AXS servers. This on-device approach follows current best practices for biometric data privacy and security, similar to guidelines recently highlighted by the NSA and CISA for identity and access management.
Justin Burleigh, Chief Product Officer at AXS, stated: “We are thrilled to introduce biometric authentication to our mobile app. This feature not only enhances security for our users but also streamlines the ticketing process, allowing fans to focus on enjoying their live event journey.”
The implementation aims to reduce fraudulent activity while simplifying the user experience. Additional benefits include improved account recovery processes and strengthened security for user accounts. The biometric authentication system integrates with existing device security features that users may already use for other applications.
This development represents a growing trend in the digital ticketing industry toward more secure authentication methods. Similar systems have been successfully implemented in public transportation, including a recent biometric ticketing system at Osaka Station in Japan. The technology also addresses rising concerns about ticket fraud and scalping, which have plagued the entertainment industry in recent years.
The system’s privacy-focused approach reflects growing awareness of biometric data protection requirements, particularly as regions worldwide implement stricter regulations governing the collection and use of biometric information. By processing biometric data on-device, AXS’s solution helps venues and event organizers comply with various privacy regulations while enhancing security measures.
