Aware, Inc. has achieved top performance in the Department of Homeland Security’s Remote Identity Validation Technology Demonstration (RIVTD), earning recognition for best-in-class passive liveness detection. The result underscores the company’s leadership in biometric authentication, particularly in preventing spoofing attacks in remote identity verification scenarios.
Passive Liveness Leads in DHS Evaluation
The RIVTD program, led by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, assesses remote identity validation technologies for their ability to detect genuine users and reject fraudulent attempts. The evaluation includes testing for document authentication, selfie-to-ID matching, and liveness detection – key components of secure remote onboarding systems.
Unlike active liveness detection, which requires the user to perform specific actions, passive liveness detection works silently in the background to determine whether biometric input is from a live person. Aware’s approach minimizes user friction while maintaining strong resistance to spoofing techniques such as photos, videos, and masks.
The recognition follows a series of competitive evaluations where vendors showed varying levels of performance. Earlier RIVTD testing rounds highlighted gaps in presentation attack detection, elevating the significance of Aware’s consistent, high-ranking results. The company’s performance in Track 3 testing builds on previous success in the 2023 NIST FATE-PAD evaluations, where it also demonstrated resilience against sophisticated spoofing.
Expanding Applications in Regulated Industries
Aware’s success in the DHS testing comes as the company expands into new markets. In May, Aware announced a partnership in the gaming industry to provide biometric Know Your Customer (KYC) solutions. The move reflects the growing demand for trusted identity verification in regulated sectors such as gaming, finance, and healthcare.
The company has also been active in healthcare and government services, where biometric authentication and fraud prevention are essential to secure digital transformation. As more organizations adopt remote onboarding solutions, vendors with validated anti-spoofing capabilities are well positioned to support both compliance and user trust.
