Welcome to FindBiometrics’ digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:
IARPA Seeks ‘reID’ Tech, Announces “Proposers’ Day”
America’s Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) is looking for vendors to provide technology for a program aimed at autonomously re-identifying objects across diverse video sensor collections, and “map all objects to a common reference frame.” Such “reID” technologies will initially focus on specific object classes like people and vehicles, but the aim is to ultimately enable this capability for any kind of object. Authorities are planning to host a “Proposers’ Day” for the IARPA Video Linking and Intelligence from Non-Collaborative Sensors (Video LINCS) program on February 7, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants must register by noon EST on February 1.
BioConnect Secures Full ‘Chain of Custody’ With SPT Acquisition
BioConnect has acquired Silent Partner Technologies, a strategic move aimed at enabling the Toronto-based converged access specialist to offer a full “Chain of Custody” solution for controlled substances. Based in Florida, SPT is a provider of RFID technology for asset management that serves a range of application areas. In announcing the acquisition, BioConnect framed it as a follow-up to its acquisition of MedixSafe in 2021. The latter was known for developing secure storage cabinets for narcotics in medical and emergency facilities, which were then made compatible with the BioConnect Trust Platform after the acquisition.
Revolut Faces BIPA Class Action
Revolut, the developer of a popular digital banking and budgeting app, is facing a class action lawsuit over alleged violations of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). The app uses a selfie-based onboarding system that collects users’ face biometrics. Plaintiff Tina Haralampopoulos says Revolut has violated BIPA by failing to obtain users’ written consent, and failing to provide required disclosures concerning data use and retention policies, and the involvement of third parties in the use of biometric data.
New Hampshire House Approves Privacy Bill
An amended comprehensive privacy law has been passed by the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and now awaits the expected approval of the Senate, which already passed a similar version of the bill. Among other things, Senate Bill 255 will require data controllers to perform data protection assessments for the processing of sensitive data, which is defined as including biometrics, genetic information, and geolocation, among other types of information. But the proposed law would leave enforcement to the discretion of the state’s Attorney General, rather than allowing consumer action.
New Automotive Tech from Lamborghini, Continental
Lamborghini has announced a new digital platform aimed at enhancing the driver experience. Dubbed “Telemetry X”, it comprises a data-sharing system for remote coaching, an AI-powered voice assistant, and a “Biometric Data System” that will monitor the driver’s heart rate and stress level. It isn’t yet clear what kind of sensor system will be used to collect the data or how it would be situated in a given car, but in its announcement Lamborghini framed it as building on a prior “telemetry system” that operated through a mobile app. Telemetry X was developed in collaboration with Accenture, and it will find its way into actual vehicles in the “near future,” according to Lamborghini CEO and Chairman Stephan Winkelmann.
Germany-based Continental, a provider of automotive components (not to be confused with Lincoln Motor Company’s Continental car brand), has unveiled a face-based access system for cars that operates through camera systems installed in a vehicle’s B-pillar and behind the driver display console. The “Face Authentication Display” system is designed to both unlock the driver’s door when the driver is recognized, and to automatically start the ignition. It is supported by liveness detection from Trinamix, whose under-display Face Authentication technology received certifications through the Android Biometric Security Test and the FIDO Alliance’s Biometric Component Certification Program in early 2022.
SiLC Unveils ‘Mini’ LiDAR Solution
SiLC Technologies has announced the Eyeonic Vision System Mini, which can bring sub-millimeter depth precision at distances exceeding 10 meters to robots and other devices. The system includes a full multi-channel FMCW LiDAR on a single silicon photonics chip, as well as an ntegrated FMCW LiDAR System-on-Chip (SoC); and it leverages what SiLC calls the industry’s first purpose-built digital LiDAR processor, iND83301 (“Surya”), developed by indie Semiconductor. SiLC, a Silicon Valley startup that has raised millions in funding, is demonstrating the new solution at this week’s CES 2024 event in Las Vegas.
