Automated Medicine Dispenser Gets Facial Recognition Via Ver-ID

An innovative medicine dispenser system is going to use Applied Recognition’s Ver-ID facial recognition technology to ensure that doses are issued to their intended recipients.

Developed by Toronto-based AceAge, the Karie system is a compact, automated medical dispenser unit with an interface very similar to the front face of a smartphone. Its essential purpose is to automatically dispense medication at the appropriate time, ensuring that patients are getting the right dosages. Now, with the integration of Ver-ID, the system will be able to accurately identify users, helping to ensure that medication doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

It will also improve the user experience. As AceAge CEO Spencer Waugh explains in a statement announcing the integration, it will let users “dispense their prescriptions at a glance”. It will also facilitate e-signatures for medication adherence records, with AceAge pitching Karie as “a must-have for management of late-stage clinical trials where strong documentation of adherence is essential.”

The integration offers more good news for Applied Recognition, which also announced this week that IT services provider Software Group had added Ver-ID to its solutions portfolio. AceAge, meanwhile, is aiming to commercially launch Karie later this year, which could help to further raise Applied Recognition’s portfolio as the solution makes its way into the healthcare market.
