authID.ai will soon be the holder of a patent for a new transaction method. The company has already received a notification from the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), and expects the patent to be issued on November 23.
Patent No. 11182777 details a new methodology for biometric identity verification. In that regard, the system will link a biometric identifier like a facial recognition template to someone’s Primary Account Number (PAN) to give people a way to authorize transactions without needing to disclose any sensitive personal information. Merchants would have access to someone’s PAN, and could use a biometric scan to match the PAN to the account holder. However, they would not necessarily need to have access to any other details about that individual.
According to authID, the new system echoes the one that is currently used for credit card and payment processing. authID’s offering simply adds an additional layer of biometric security to further mitigate the threat of fraud.
The biometric identity attributes would be stored in an encrypted database, and could be referenced whenever the account holder needs to prove their identity during an interaction. The service has a range of potential applications, covering everything from digital and physical access control to public transportation in addition to point-of-sale payments. Those third parties never have access to the account holder’s biometric data during the transaction.
“This patent grant validates the innovation behind authID’s proprietary solutions and is further proof of our commitment to optimizing the identity verification process and addressing the inherent problems of legacy authentication options,” said authID.ai CEO Tom Thimot. “This brings us one step closer to actualizing our vision of ‘payments by face,’ in which every enterprise can use cloud-based biometrics to offer its customers a more convenient, frictionless, and secure transaction experience.”
Face-based payments have already been enabled by PopID at a number of restaurants and retail outlets, while the Moscow metro has introduced its own Face Pay naked payments scheme. authID.ai, meanwhile, has provided biometric onboarding services for CU NextGen and Hamilton Reserve Bank since rebranding from Ipsidy in July.
