The Australian government has contracted Vision-Box to provide biometric screening technology for arrivals at the country’s international airports.
The contract builds on a relationship previously established when Vision-Box was selected to provide biometric SmartGates at airport departures as part of the Seamless Traveller program launched in 2015. The new contract covers a three-year period, and will see Vision-Box deploy technology allowing airport arrivals to “self-process” without the need for a physical passport, according to a statement from the company.
Vision-Box has also indicated that the system will be contactless, suggesting it could rely on modalities such as facial recognition.
Commenting on the new project, Vision-Box CEO Miguel Leitmann said it “represents an unparalleled milestone in the history of automation at the border”.
The contract arrives amid booming interest in biometric airport screening around the world, and soon after the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection announced near the start of this year its aim of establishing nationwide, contactless, biometric airport screening by the year 2020.
