Auckland Airport Deploys Vision-Box Pre-Security Gates

New Zealand’s Auckland Airport has partnered with Vision-Box to automate some of its security procedures. The airport has deployed 12 new pre-security eGates that will scan passenger boarding passes before allowing them to move on to security areas. The eGates will replace the two employees who manually checked boarding passes under the previous system, and is expected to quintuple the airport’s processing capacity.  

The automated eGates are part of a broader infrastructure overhaul that is expected to include biometric screening and automated baggage drop and check-in procedures. The multi-billion-dollar update will streamline the passenger experience and facilitate the flow of people through the Auckland Airport.   

“We see automation as a key way to improve the airport system by being more accurate, reliable and faster,” said Auckland Airport Operations GM Anna Cassels-Brown. “Over the next decade we will be integrating smart technology throughout the customer journey.”

Vision-Box, meanwhile, is planning to roll out an improved version of its Orchestra software suite sometime in 2020. The new Orchestra will improve the utility of the pre-security gates, offering real-time flight information and enabling multi-pass screening for families and other large groups of people. It can also be integrated into existing access control systems to help verify the identities of airport employees.    

The news comes shortly after Vision-Box renewed its SmartGate partnership with the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The company recently opened a new manufacturing facility in Portugal, while Orchestra’s facial recognition algorithm scored well in a round of NIST testing.
