Atos to Coordinate 2020 Olympics’ Biometric Access Control System

Atos will play an important role in implementing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics’ facial recognition access control system, the company has revealed.

Acting as the International Olympic Committee’s Worldwide IT Partner, Atos will act as the overarching manager of an ‘Advanced Access Control System’. Panasonic will provide equipment for the AACS, while NEC will deliver the facial recognition technology used to identify athletes, staff, and volunteers seeking access to Olympic venues.

For its part, Atos will integrate Integrated Circuit chips into ID passes used by accredited individuals to gain access to more than 350 entry points, including those at the Olympic Village, the Main Press Centre, and the International Broadcast Centre.

Atos says that the official passes will be used both for access control in Olympic venues and as visa waivers to individuals seeking to enter the country.

Commenting on the project in a statement, Atos VP Patrick Adiba said, “By collaborating with other tech partners, we will be able to organize a historic facial recognition accreditation entry system which will significantly reduce fraud, error and waiting time at entry point,” adding that his firm is “thrilled to provide this innovative solution to contribute to ensuring a secure setting for the Games”.
