X2 Biosystems is teaming up with the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) to develop a wearable concussion management system for soldiers. The company specializes in biometric technology that monitors brain injuries in industrial, sports, and military contexts.X2’s system uses a mobile touch-based interface, and the company says it’s durable and versatile enough “for the Soldier who is dealing with daily missions that may include extreme temperatures, conditions, and situations.” In fact, the company’s President of the Government and Industrial Division, Steve Layfield, is a retired major general. Speaking of the contract, Mr. Layfield said that X2 is “honored” to have received it, adding that the solutions the company provides “to professional and amateur athletes will now evolve to continue to significantly contribute to the effort for earlier detection of traumatic brain injuries in the men and women who give so much in the service of their country.”
The military has been increasingly interested in wearable biometric technology; one major developer recently reported a 300 percent uptick in licensing partnerships, noting that a significant proportion of that demand had come from the military sector. It seems a natural extension from the increasingly advanced fitness-tracking applications that have proven so popular, and will surely go some way in helping to investigate the kinds of brain injuries that can arise for soldiers in the line of duty.
