News Roundup: A Week Of Innovation

Last week at FindBiometrics we continued our month long examination of Invisible Biometrics while the industry news was diverse and exciting. Headlines about the FBI’s NGI program, international government deployments, finance and major biometric innovations highlighted just how dynamic the biometrics industry has become.

Last week in our Featured Articles section we examined the power of facial recognition biometrics in marketing deployments – an area of application that is as powerful as it is controversial. The industry news section also touched on our monthly featured topic with a report that BioCatch was approved for two new behavioral biometrics patents.

Major Innovation

Last week brought with it major new product announcements and patent news. Synaptics unveiled a groundbreaking innovation for on-device authentication in the form of its Match-in-Sensor technology. The FacialNetwork, meanwhile, announced a 3D facial recognition app. In terms of proprietary announcements, ImageWare Systems announced its patent approval in Canada and Australia, and a new patent filed by Apple has experts speculating the the company’s logo may one day soon house a fingerprint sensor. All of that and we reported that researchers at University of California, Davis are developing a low cost ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

In integrations news last week fingerprints was the name of the game. Nok Nok Labs partnered with IDEX ASA and the company’s integrated the latter’s fingerprint sensors technology with the former’s S3 Authentication Suite. In the access control world, Suprema biometric technology found itself integrated with the ACTenterprise access control system from Access Control Technology Ltd.

Governments

Governmental biometrics news last week had its share of success and controversy. In the USA, a Florida Congressman voiced his mocking opinion of the TWIC biometric seaport card system while the results came in regarding to exactly how much personal data was stolen in the high profile OPM data breach. Internationally, we received update that Jamaica is planning to incorporate biometrics into its national ID program and in the Philippines we saw initial numbers regarding how many voters are registered for the 2016 national election. Additionally, Frost & Sullivan awarded Credence ID for its versatility, being an integral part of the Aadhaar national ID project and receiving a variety of versatile deployments internationally.

Biometric tracking technology was in the news last week with the Delhi government considering its deployment to crack down on absent and late hospital staff. Also, Iris ID announced that its biometric technology has been deployed at a sugar mill in San Vicente for time and attendance tracking purposes. Biometric patient tracking made the news last week too, with news of a deployment in India where biometrics are keeping track of tuberculosis patients’s vaccination history.

The FBI’s Next Generation Identification system made the news twice last week. The airports that will be used to pilot the NGI’s RapBack program were selected and the FBI caught a wanted pedophile using facial recognition technology.
