Spanish authorities have implemented a biometric screening system at La Línea de la Concepción, a major border between Spain and Gibraltar. The project was contracted by the Spanish Ministry of Interior and the National Police Force, and was implemented by Vision-Box in collaboration with partner Accenture.
The new border control system consists of two major components: Vision-Box’s vb i-match ABC eGates, and a software management platform used by the authorities to manage the border gates. Twenty-six eGates have been installed (13 inbound and 13 outbound) and are now matching travelers’ facial biometrics against those on their travel documents, with additional fingerprint biometrics recorded for Spanish citizens. And the Spanish National Police are now able to centrally control the eGates in real time via Vision-Box’s software, allowing take manual control over the automated screening system whenever necessary.
It’s another high-profile deployment for a company that has already become highly prominent for its biometric screening solutions in the region. Earlier this year, Vision-Box provided the technology for a pilot project testing biometric borders at the Lisbon International Airport; like the new La Línea de la Concepción deployment, that project was meant to help government authorities manage the flow of migration into the Schengen area. Schengen has seen a major influx of refugees from parts of the Middle East and Africa in recent months, and further biometric controls are anticipated for the region’s borders, which could give Vision-Box further opportunities to deploy its technology.
