In law enforcement scenarios time means everything. Investigations hinge on collecting quality forensic evidence as fast as possible in order to make sure the right people are found and society remains safe for the innocent. A new biometric handheld device from Booz Allen stands to speed up forensic processes for this exact reason.
The VAMPIRE tactical device is roughly the size of a smartphone and allows forensics professionals to do realtime biometric matching operations with on-site latent and live fingerprint evidence. The device is easy to use and can be operated with minimal specialized training.
Adam Weiner, Booz Allen principal, says that time is a critical factor in forensic scenarios outside of law enforcement too. He cites military, humanitarian and homeland security scenarios as also requiring every spare second for success to be achieved.
“By putting the VAMPIRE device in the hands of investigators, we can greatly reduce the time it takes to get valuable forensic information that could break open a case,” says Wiener. “VAMPIRE makes it possible to begin the forensic collection and analysis process before a trail goes cold and does so in ways that allow for faster pursuit of persons of interest.”
A key feature that VAMPIRE brings to forensics applications is its ability to match on-site fingerprints without having to have them lifted from surfaces.
Wiener continues, “VAMPIRE is the most recent example of how Booz Allen is pivoting to use its broad experiences in technical engineering, system integration and innovation to deliver market-wide products in the defense intelligence and law enforcement sectors.”
VAMPIRE will be demonstrated for the first time this Sunday in a simulated crime scene at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference and Law Enforcement Education and Technology Exposition in Orlando, Florida.
