The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has partnered with UK-based facial biometrics specialist Customer Clever to develop a commercial 3D facial recognition system.
The companies have embarked on a two-year project together, with joint funding of £170,000. In a statement announcing the project on its website, UWE Bristol asserted that its Centre for Machine Vision has been working on 3D facial recognition technology for over a decade, and that its experts will oversee the new project.
Commenting on the technology, UWE Bristol Computer Simulation and Machine Vision Professor Lyndon Smith said, “We think it’s on the verge of becoming really big,” but added later that “first we have to iron out problems with how the technology performs.”
The collaboration’s announcement arrives at a time of growing interest in 3D facial recognition technology, with Apple thought to be working on integrating it into this year’s new flagship iPhone. Meanwhile, facial recognition in general is seeing something of a boom in the area of border control, with 3D facial recognition poised to be the next logical step in advancing such security systems.
