Fingerprint authentication is now pretty much a standard feature on new smartphones, but users of the USA Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact may have so far found their devices lacking in this respect. But as it turns out, the devices’ lack of the feature is actually just a software issue, as Xperia Blog reports.
It turns out that the feature is merely disabled in the US. If users change the location setting of their smartphones’ firmware from the US to the UK, suddenly the smartphones will allow users to take advantage of their built-in fingerprint sensors.
There’s a catch, of course. Many users will find the process for ‘flashing’ the firmware overwhelmingly complex. It will also void the device’s warranty.
Still, there are likely to be at least some US users who really want the same fingerprint scanning functionality found on other major smartphones. And given the technological sophistication that Sony is going for with its Xperia line, it’s probably a feature that many users would have expected out of the box.
