The British government has launched a new service that will bring visa application services to individuals’ homes. Called On Demand Mobile Visa, the service is run by visa processing company VFS Global.
For a fee of £750, On Demand Mobile Visa will bring visa application materials to remote locations, allowing applicants to skip the lineups that can occur at application centers. Up to 10 people can request a visit at a time, so for the same flat fee On Demand Mobile Visa could process multiple applicants at a designated location such as a workplace, for example. The service is available for all types of visa applications except those for long-term student visas, which require a video interview with authorities in the UK.
The service should help to improve access to UK visa services, which must be done in person partially due to their requirement of biometric identification. While the UK’s biometric requirement for visa applicants is longstanding, it’s a security measure that is increasingly being adopted around the world, with India having recently adopted such a requirement, and the Schengen countries looking more to biometric screening as the EU seeks to cope with its ongoing migrant crisis.
