“…UIDAI has now asked the government agencies concerned to remove the information from their websites.”
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is once again seeking to reassure citizens that the country’s Aadhaar biometric ID database is secure.
The latest effort comes in the wake of a report that over 200 government websites were displaying leaked Aadhaar information including personal details about citizens. UIDAI says that in fact the information was not leaked, but was deliberately posted “as a measure of proactive disclosure”, according to an official statement.
Nevertheless, UIDAI has now asked the government agencies concerned to remove the information from their websites.
UIDAI previously sought to reassure the public about the security of Aadhaar earlier this year after reports that a financial services organization had fraudulently performed a large amount of authentication transactions through Aadhaar. UIDAI followed that incident with the implementation of new encryption standards for devices using Aadhaar for authentication.
The Aadhaar biometric ID program has an extensive reach across Indian society, and is used to verify the identities for citizens across a range of government services.
