A reoccurring theme in in the discussion surrounding new biometric physical access control and security deployments recently has been administrative convenience. A major obstacle in the adoption of stronger-than-pass-card security is the cost of laying down a new infrastructure, maintaining it and the time involved in training authorized personnel to properly authenticate when going about their daily jobs.
SRI International is a not for profit organization with an eye to dissolve these barriers through a combination of convenient use and easy integration. Yesterday, the company introduced the IOM PassPort SL as a step further in the direction of low-friction physical access for areas that are notoriously difficult to manage due to high traffic.
The PassPort combines dual-iris recognition and face capture capabilities to add multiple biometric factors to automated turn styles and entrances. All of this is achieved by SRI’s promise of minimal changes to operational procedures and hardware. The big deal about this deployment solution is the Iris on the Move (IOM) technology it uses. SRI developed this iris recognition with real life practical use in mind. The biometric scanners, as their name would imply, allow for accurate iris scanning from a distance without requiring the subject to stop moving or carfully position their eyes.
Once PassPort security is layered on top of a buildings existing physical access infrastructure, things are made exceedingly simple for authorized personnel: they simply walk through the doors that they normally do, authorized and authenticated by a contactless biometric scan that takes about two seconds per person.
SRI International’s products and services division vice president Mark Clifton expands on the company’s goals: “Positive identification of individuals in crowded security locations, such as corporate lobbies and airports, is becoming more critical. Incorporating high-speed biometric identification into existing security infrastructures without limiting throughput can address this challenge.”
This new physical access solution is currently available and will be showcased at Intersec 2014 with a live demonstration.
