Synaptics Tech Gets High-Profile Deployment in ASUS ZenFone AR

ASUS is sticking with Synaptics for the biometric capabilities of its newest smartphone, using a Natural ID fingerprint sensor in the ZenFone AR.

The smartphone maker has used Synaptics sensors in multiple devices, most recently the ASUS Zenpad 3S 10 tablet announced last autumn. This newest ASUS handset also uses Synaptics’ ClearPad touchscreen controllers.

It’s a high-profile deployment for Synaptics. The ZenFone AR is the first smartphone to support the Google Tango augmented reality platform and Google’s Daydream VR headset, offerings that could find a hungry market in the year to come.

In a statement announcing the integration, ASUS mobile unit manager Rangoon Chang said that the “ZenFone AR was built for augmented reality, and thanks to Synaptics, adding high-performance touch, and the convenience and security of fingerprint biometrics was an important upgrade.”
