Synaptics Launches Evaluation Kit for Automotive Biometrics

Synaptics has launched a new evaluation kit aimed at bringing the company’s fingerprint sensor technology into automotive applications.

Now widely available, the Natural ID fingerprint sensor evaluation kit (EVK) is designed to let OEMs and other such companies develop vehicular biometric applications such as in-car payments, personal customization based on the driver’s preferences, infotainment interaction, and more. Synaptics’ sensors feature encryption technology, and also respond to a range of gestures including taps, swipes, and longer presses.

In a statement announcing the EVK, Synaptics Automotive Business Senior Director Sunil Thomas said it offers “a unique and simple way to implement biometric authentication into next generation automobiles.”

It’s an extension of the company’s line of automotive products first announced last autumn, and arrives at a time when other biometric sensor companies are starting to intensively explore the automotive sector. All told, these point to a future in which connected cars increasingly use biometrics for a range of purposes that should help to improve the driver experience, adding value to the vehicles hitting the market.
