Biometric Student ID Solution Expanding in West Africa

Together with West Africa-based integrator Vatebra, Credence ID is expanding a student ID project initially launched in Nigeria.

The system uses Credence ID’s CredenceOne mobile fingerprint scanning devices to authenticate the identities of student test-takers. Explaining its success in the Nigeria deployment, Vatebra Managing Director Kunle Akinniran said the device “has become the first and last touch point for virtually every young person in Nigeria today.”

The companies say that it has virtually eliminated identity fraud in Nigeria’s statewide student testing, and it’s also now being used by the West African Examinations Council. The results have evidently impressed authorities in Gambia, Ghana, and Sierra Leone, all of which will soon see similar deployments care of Credence ID and Vatebra.

The news comes from this week’s ID4Africa conference in Kigali, Rwanda, an event aimed at promoting digital ID solutions that can help drive socio-economic development in the continent.
