Sonavation has entered into a licensing agreement with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) for its ultrasonic biometric sensor technology.
Sonavation’s biometric technology is focused on fingerprint imaging, with the company having announced back in 2015 that its sensor technology could scan through the Corning Gorilla Glass used in higher-end smartphones. The company has also boasted that its SonicTouch technology, which enables three-dimensional fingerprint imaging, is “virtually unspoofable”.
In a statement announcing the ADI deal, Sonavation indicated that its technology would be combined with ADI’s semiconductor technology to offer “complete biometric system solutions for markets where secure authentication is essential,” and highlighted the need for such technology in smartphones. With smartphone makers increasingly looking to make more space available for their devices’ screens, Sonavation emphasized that its technology, which “allows for authentication through various materials”, offers OEMs “the flexibility to place the fingerprint sensor anywhere on the phone”.
Still, other application areas are in the offing. Commenting on the deal, ADI VP Yusuf Jamal highlighted “the healthcare, automotive, and industrial sectors” in addition to the consumer sector, noting that the partnership will allow the companies to target customers across these areas.
