SITA is proclaiming the success of its Boston Logan International Airport deployment in collaboration with JetBlue and the US Customs and Border Protection agency. First announced this past spring, the pioneering program was meant to explore the use of biometric facial recognition technology – provided by SITA – as a replacement for passengers’ travel documents.
According to a statement from SITA, “the vast majority” of passengers who are invited to participate in the automated boarding system choose to do so. The company also asserts that its facial recognition technology offers a “close to 100% match-rate”.
It isn’t just SITA that has come away pleased with the trial. Commenting on the effort, JetBlue Customer Experience EVP Joanna Geraghty said, “We could not be happier with the results of this trial and hope to work with SITA in future iterations of our self-boarding program.”
SITA says its work with the CBP and JetBlue is ongoing. Meanwhile, the CBP’s broader effort to extend its biometric border screening efforts across the US continues.
