Singapore Changi Airport Gets FAST Biometric Screening

Administrators believe the automation will not only improve the passenger experience but will help them cut down on costs by as much as 40 percent.

A new terminal at a major Singapore airport is going to use facial recognition technology to fast-track passenger screening. Singapore Changi’s Terminal 4, or T4, is slated to open in the latter half of 2017.

Integration of the biometric technology is meant to automate and enhance the convenience of the passenger screening process, in accordance with a general design focus seeking to improve the passenger experience. The plan is essentially to have this system eliminate the need for any human staff in validating boarding passes and passports – a process that the airport’s management calls Fast and Seamless Travel, or FAST. Administrators believe the automation will not only improve the passenger experience but will help them cut down on costs by as much as 40 percent.

Biometric screening has been on the ascent at airports around the world, with another deployment recently announced for the Marseille Provence Airport in France, and the European Commission also exploring systems for deployment across the continent. Meanwhile, in America, the TSA PreCheck program, which offers fast-tracked biometric screening for pre-enrolled passengers, has been attracting considerable attention.
