SecuGen Fingerprint Reader Exceeds Expectations

Fingerprint biometrics company SecuGen has announced that its Hamster Pro 20 fingerprint reader has now received IP65 certification. Third-party tests conducted in South Korea confirmed that the device sufficiently protects against water and dust ingress to attain the credential.

That adds to an already impressive roster of certifications held by the Hamster Pro 20. Previously, it has proven capable with respect to the FBI’s FAP 20 image quality standards, allowing it to be used with US government PIV applications; and it’s also STQC certified, allowing it to be used in the Indian government’s ambitious Aadhaar program. The latest certification builds its credibility in terms of ruggedness, allowing it to be used more widely in dusty and wet environments.

In a statement, SecuGen VP of Engineering Dan Riley explained that the device has actually exceeded the company’s expectations, saying the “IP65 rating was beyond our initial design goals for this product.” Nevertheless, the company has maintained a high standard for the quality of its fingerprint scanning devices; its new U20 USB fingerprint sensor, shown off at the most recent CES, also boasts of FAP 20 and PIC certifications.
