Virginia-based Sciometrics has partnered with the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) to help the agency develop standards for contactless fingerprint scanning.
The partnership appears to be a response to the NIST’s call for collaboration in the late summer of 2015. NIST is one of the most important standards bodies for biometric technologies, and works closely with government agencies like the FBI to establish certification guidelines; so with the emergence of contactless technologies for fingerprint scanning, the organization naturally sought help from industry.
At the center of Sciometrics’ Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the NIST is the company’s SlapShot mobile app, which allows users to capture the biometric data of up to ten of a subject’s fingers and the subject’s face using a smartphone camera, all of which can be done in less than a minute, according to Sciometrics. Commenting in a statement announcing the agreement, Sciometrics CEO Mark Walch said the app “is already in beta testing with government agencies”. And given government authorities’ increasing interest in biometric identification technologies through programs like the FBI’s Next Generation Identification, the NIST collaboration should prove fruitful for all concerned.
