Salesforce, a major US cloud computing company, has announced that it’s going to support the FIDO Alliance’s Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) authentication standard.
The support will arrive with the Salesforce Winter ’17 release this month, and will be facilitated via YubiKey support. That means Salesforce users will be able to register their YubiKey USB key devices to use them for second-factor authentication. Going forward, a user who opts in will be prompted to press the button on her connected YubiKey device whenever she logs in to her Salesforce account. Alternatively, users can opt to use the Salesforce Phone App as a second factor for authentication.
Commenting on the Salesforce support in a blog post, Yubico’s Ronnie Manning notes that it arrives “on the heels of more than a dozen online services” that have also offered U2F support, including Google, Github, Dropbox, Okta, Gitlab, Dashlane, and Bitbucket. It’s also worth noting that there are over 250 FIDO Certified products now available, and its standards are now catching on with companies that aren’t even FIDO Alliance members.
That’s good news for Yubico and for Salesforce, with many users likely to appreciate the move to support U2F.
