“Over 45,000 MorphoTablet devices will be used to verify voter lists and to authenticate voters using both their photos and fingerprint recognition.”
Kenyan authorities have selected Safran Identity & Security to provide biometric technology to be used in this year’s general elections, the company has announced.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission launched its voter registration effort earlier this year, announcing plans to distribute thousands of biometric registration kits across the country. It now appears that Safran is handling that effort, and the rest of it — namely, the authentication of registered voters in the election itself, which the company said “will be key to the rollout of free, fair and credible elections” in a statement.
Safran Identity & Security CEO Anne Bouverot commented that the company will provide Kenyan authorities with “a complete and secure solution in record time” for the general elections, which she called a “major democratic event” for the country.
Over 45,000 MorphoTablet devices will be used to verify voter lists and to authenticate voters using both their photos and fingerprint recognition. MorphoTablets were similarly used in recent elections in Ivory Coast; and with Safran having seen an extension of its working relationship with the National Electoral Institute of Mexico toward the end of last year, the company appears to be solidifying its position as a major global vendor of biometric election technology.
