“By linking patient records to biometric profiles, healthcare providers can cut down on paperwork, and eliminate duplicate records.”
Safran Identity & Security is making the pitch for biometric technology in healthcare, and for its MorphoWave reader in particular.
In a post on its website, the company asserts that the technology can be particularly useful for patient identification. “Several US hospitals have already implemented biometric authentication to manage homonyms, which are often a source of confusion,” the company notes. More importantly, the technology can be used to effectively identify patients who are disoriented or unconscious and therefore unable to identify themselves.
The other major benefit lies in administrative efficiency. By linking patient records to biometric profiles, healthcare providers can cut down on paperwork, and eliminate duplicate records.
They’re the same benefits offered by solutions like Imprivata’s PatientSecure, which uses palm vein scans to link medical records to patients. But Safran’s MorphoWave offers a special advantage in that it’s contactless; the system can read multiple fingerprints with just the wave of a hand. That enables a means of patient identification that is significantly more hygienic — a matter of considerable importance in a hospital setting.
