We continued to unpack the results of our Year in Review survey last week. We focused on the state of liveness detection technology and how much our respondents believe it should be a priority moving forward in biometrics. Later in the week we saw near-unanimous agreement from our respondents that public perception plays a crucial role in biometrics, and we examined some of the major ways identity management made its way into public discussions in 2016. Intersec 2017

Intersec 2017 is taking place this week in Dubai, and last week we reported on some of the biometrics solutions that will be showcased and announced at the expo. Suprema is set to unveil its FaceStation 2 solution, while a number of vendors are planning to show off their iris recognition technology. Iris ID will be demonstrating its IrisAccess technology, while CMITech will be showcasing its EF-45 biometrics terminal which boasts an exceptionally accessible user interface. EyeLock will be at the conference too, having expanded its presence this year, according to an announcement from the company.

Last week, Fingerprint Cards announced the date it will release its year-end report. Synaptics announced that its fingerprint sensor received full certification from China’s Banking Card Test Center, and Ievo’s Ultimate fingerprint reader received accreditation from the UK’s Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure. Meanwhile, Zwipe made the headlines with news that it has a new distributor in North America: Identification Systems Group.

NEC Corporation was at Retail’s Big Show last week showing off its facial recognition technology. The company is proving to be very active in the event circuit this winter, having already announced its lineup for the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Cognitec was in the news last week too, announcing the appointment of a new VP for its Asia Pacific division.

Facial recognition made multimodal news last week too, with InnerCore integrating Sensory’s TrulySecure authentication platform which features face and voice biometrics. The contactless combo of face and voice recognition was also part of the conversation still buzzing around this year’s CES, at which LG demonstrated its biometrics-enabled robots.

The financial biometrics news was varied last week, with stories on how the Indian government is incentivising banks to enable Aadhaar-based payments for customers. A new payments platform in Singapore aims to let customers pay with nothing but their fingerprints, too, and HSBC announced a new tech advisory board, which counts biometrics among its areas of focus.

Controversy and Biometric Law Enforcement

Biometric law enforcement brought controversy into the dialogue last week, with the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruling that compelling a suspect to unlock a fingerprint-protected smartphone does not violate their Fifth Amendment rights. Controversy has surrounded the FBI’s FACE program since its discovery by the public last year, but last week it started to bear fruit, aiding in the apprehension of a fugitive who’s been on the loose for 17 years.
