Sensor manufacturer Fingerprint Cards made the iris biometrics headlines last week with the announcement that it is acquiring Delta ID—the company behind the first iris scanning consumer smartphone. Safran Identity and Security, meanwhile, announced a partnership with FotoNation to provide an iris scanning solution compatible with the Aadhaar national ID program in India. Moving on to other biometrics of the eye, EyeVerify’s Eyeprint ID made its European debut thanks to deployment by Yapi Kredi. Safran Identity & Security’s mobile biometrics solutions were integral to recent votes undertaken in Ivory Coast, we reported last week. Elsewhere in the world, biometrics were being used in other government applications, with reports that the Karachi government is going to begin using biometric time and attendance technology, and news from Canada that the country’s government now requires biometric background checks from its contractors.

SecuGen is preparing to show off its fingerprint biometrics solutions at the upcoming RSA 2017 conference. The company also recently showed off its technology at CES in Las Vegas and, in an interview published last week, FindBiometrics President Peter O’Neill was able to catch up with SecuGen VP Sales Jeff Brown to discuss the role biometrics played at that highly regarded electronics exhibition.

Other fingerprint-focused news last week dealt with finances, appointments, and distribution partnerships. Fingerprint Cards increased its share capital and also released its year-end 2016 report, while NEXT Biometrics announced the appointment of its new CEO, and IDEX named a new US sales partner. Rounding out the fingerprint biometrics news, Precise Biometrics announced a big new licensing deal with an existing customer.
