Samsung
Samsung Electronics was named among the world’s best brands last week as the clock ticked down to the year’s big biometrics webinar event co-hosted by Samsung subsidiary Samsung SDS America. Meanwhile, Samsung Mobile made the news too, with its iris scanning smartphone returning to Korean store shelves in the wake of a massive recall effort.

Fingerprint
The main biomettic modality in the headlines last week was fingerprint, and as usual that means there were plenty of mobile integration announcements. Fingerprint Cards announced sensor integrations on Google’s new Pixel smartphones as well as a new Xiaomi device. IDEX meanwhile announced a design win for its Cardinal fingerprint sensor, and Precise Biometrics entered a licensing agreement with Image Match Design. We reported on how Xperia users in the US can hack their way to fingerprint authentication on their devices and also saw a new fingerprint biometrics patent from Apple.
Outside of the mobile realm, HID Global had us talking about about multispectral imaging with a new upgrade to its Lumidigm V-Series fingerprint technology. Take a look at last week’s big fingerprint focused headlines:

Mastercard’s face biometrics powered Identity Check (which leverages Daon’s IdentityX biometric platform) launched in Europe last week while the facial modality was put to use in Ireland where it identified a duplicate PPS account. In New York facial recognition made the news too, the contactless modality serving as one element of a large-scale bridge and tunnel system modernization project.

Sensory, Inc. was celebrating the numerous achievements it’s marked in 2016 as it also introduced the Alexa wakeup feature to its TrulyHandsfree platform customers. In the meantime, Citi continued to bring voiceprint authentication to its Asia call centers, launching the service in the Philippines.

Speaking of financial applications, we saw Apple Pay join Samsung Pay in Russia last week while South Africa’s First National Bank launched its own mobile wallet.
