Financial Tech and Biometrics
November is Financial Biometrics Month and as a start we posted a primer focused on the topic of strong authentication in commerce. The financial vertical is one of the most active spaces in biometrics, so in addition to our featured content, the news was filled with headlines on the topic. Money20/20 continued to be a fixture despite having concluded the week prior, British Banks warned Apple Pay users to not store other people’s fingerprints on their iPhones, we learned that biometrics are paying off for MasterCard in the company’s Q3 report and saw iWallet seeking to upgrade its patent portfolio.

Facial Recognition
The facial recognition news last week was all over the world map. Controversy continued to spring up around the modality in Australia while news from the United Arab Emirates had us talking about police squad cars that can scan pedestrian faces. Facial recognition company Aurora, meanwhile, announced that it has received impressive third party evaluation for its infrared biometrics technology.

The Election in the Philippines
October 31 was the biometric voter enrollment deadline in the Philippines, and while the nation’s commission on elections almost got everyone into their database, some eligible citizens didn’t scan their fingers in time.

Last week the FIDO Alliance announced that it now has 72 Certified products on the market, now including iOS authentication tech. Meanwhile, the IEEE was making strides in eHealth standards with the announcement of its latest specification, the Biometrics Open Protocol Standard.

Mobility
In mobile device news last week we saw a new phone with Eyeprint ID, a Kickstarter for a handset that can scan your earprint, and a new handheld device from Corvus that features multimodal identification. Taking mobility to the streets, we reported on a new seat belt for smart cars that can monitor vital signs and also authenticate drivers via cardiac signatures.

According to a new report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, police in California are increasingly turning to biometric solutions.
