The results are in from our 13th annual biometrics industry year in review survey and to kick things off last week we saw what you, our readers, picked as the most interesting area of application in 2015. This year has been another milestone for the biometrics industry, and last week we got a CEO perspective on the matter, with FaceFirst CEO Joe Rosenkrantz’s FindBiometrics interview on why 2015 has been exceptional for his company.

There are only three more weeks left in the year but still we’re seeing new fingerprint sensor integrations in smartphones. Once again, at the center of this news was Fingerprint Cards and Precise Biometrics, each finding their tech on a number of handsets. Beyond the tips of our digits, we also reported on EyeVerify last week, whose eye vein scanning mobile technology has been tested and positively reviewed by curious users.

Event Updates
The GSMA announced a large number of new CEO keynote speakers for the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Before that event happens in the Winter though, BIO-key International will have presented at the Imperial Capital Conference, which takes place this week in New York. A number of US security agencies in the mean time, are taking a different approach to their event calendar, slated to discus biometric technology at an upcoming informal summit.

SIBA has called for biometric security measures following the November terrorist attacks in Paris. Following in the wake of that suggestion, the US government has tightened the security surrounding its visa waiver program. Internationally, we continued to see controversy around the upcoming Philippines biometric election, with the country’s supreme court putting a stop to Comelec’s disenfranchisement of unenrolled voters. In India, meanwhile, the navy has instituted biometric identification for fishermen, and in Macau, authorities have begun preparations to implement facial recognition at border crossings.

Innovation and Upgrades
There was a lot of forward momentum last week in terms of identity innovation. Synaptics and Nok Nok Labs partnered with the aim of streamlining the FIDO certification process, ImageWare announced that it will soon have approval for its 11th patent, and Michigan State University licensed its new facial recognition tech to NEC Corporation of America. Neurotechnology upgraded its surveillance tech while branding it with a new name, and we also heard news of a new microcontroller that could have epic implications for the future of biometrics.
