Medication management specialist Omnicell has won a contract to provide its technology to Erlanger Health System, a non-profit health system affiliated with the University of Tennessee’s College of Medicine. Erlanger serves a 31,000 square-mile region and treats more than 300,000 patients every year.
Included in the technology platform that Omnicell will be providing are business analytics and medication management software, its web-based Anwhere RN remote medication management system, and its OmniRX automated medication dispensing cabinets, which control access via a biometric identification system. The solution aims to provide both security and greater automation to the management and administration of patient medication.
In a statement, Erlanger Health System’s director of pharmacy, Allen Broome, suggested that the selection of Omnicell reflected his organization’s commitment to high standards in care, saying it “was not just about evaluating technology – it reflected how deeply we care about the community we serve and the responsibility we have to ensure best clinical practices are carried out.”
Omnicell has previously enjoyed some success in the South, having won a major contract to provide its technology to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina last fall. It may be that that deal has helped to build the company’s reputation in the region; in any case, there is a growing market for high-tech, biometric storage systems for narcotics and prescription medications as hospitals continue to digitize and automate much of their administrative work, and Omnicell is clearly enjoying the trend so far.
