NYU Medical Center Offers High-Profile Demonstration of Biometrics in EHR

The Brooklyn-based NYU Lutheran medical center has launched a huge upgrade of its electronic health record system, and biometric technology is playing a significantly role.

Its new system is called Epic, and has two primary components. One is an online app called MyChart, which enables patients to remotely access medical records and consult with doctors. The other is a biometric system that links a given patient’s medical records to a profile based on palm-vein patterns.

Called PatientSecure, the latter is a solution offered by Imprivata. The company says it’s already being used in hundreds of hospitals, with its next most recent deployment being at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills earlier this month, where it has seen praise for its capacity to streamline records management and protect patient data.

This latest deployment appears to have been particularly complex, with hospital administrators having planned the overall Epic project for over a year, and $29.2 million in state funding helping things along. As such, it offers a high-profile showcase of what a modern EHR system can aspire to, and how biometric technology can play an important role.
