Security technology firm NEC Corporation of America will be upgrading the biometric identification systems of two counties in California. San Bernadino and Riverside Counties’ CAL-ID units have chosen NEC’s Integra-ID 5 MBIS system.
CAL-ID stands for California Identification System; it’s the state’s automated system for cataloging fingerprint records, used by the Department of Justice. NEC’s Integra-ID 5 system employs a combination of biometric hardware and software for forensic investigations and public safety applications in general; it’s part of the company’s Building Safer Cities platform. So it’s a natural fit for law enforcement authorities seeking to modernize their capabilities with respect to forensics.
NEC has been a fixture in news regarding governmental law enforcement applications. It has made a name for itself in performance tests conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), winning first place in facial recognition and also in fingerprint scanning. Given that government interest in biometric technology for security purposes is very strong, it’s no surprise that NEC finds itself winning and renewing such contracts.
