NEC Facial Recognition Helps Secure Sky-High Tourist Attraction

NEC‘s facial recognition technology is being used to help secure a high-profile new tourist attraction in South Korea.

Called Seoul Sky, it’s the third-highest observation deck in the world, and the highest one with a glass floor. It’s on the upper floors of a 1,823-foot skyscraper called Lotte World Tower.

In a statement announcing its involvement in the attraction, NEC said its NeoFace Watch facial recognition technology is being used to secure the facility by scanning a surveillance feed for the faces of individuals on a watch list. The company adds that there are also plans to extend its functionality to the detection of VIPs.

Given the sophistication of NEC’s facial recognition technology, which ranked first in NIST’s recent FIVE evaluation, the deployment should help to reassure tourists who may already be a little on edge, given the view beneath their feet.
