NEC Australia is enhancing its NeoFace facial recognition platform in Australia with the integration of technology from CrowdOptic, a Silicon Valley firm specializing in computer vision analytics. The partnership will enhance the mobile capabilities of NeoFace customers in the smart city, police, and first responder sectors.
While the NeoFace platform already enables such personnel to use their mobile devices’ cameras to help identify individuals encountered in the field, CrowdOptic’s triangulation technology will enable faster identification when two or more cameras are aimed at the same subject. Additionally, mobile device cameras can be aimed at a particular point of interest, such as a burning building, in order to triangulate its position, allowing third parties to find it from a remote location.
In a statement announcing the collaboration, NEC Australia said it “offers both companies an Australian testbed for expanding the integration with NEC’s facial recognition platform on a global basis.”
NEC’s facial recognition technology is already widely used by police authorities in Australia, with the company having been contracted to upgrade the biometric identification system of the country’s national police service in the spring of last year. NEC also agreed to provide South Australia Police with a facial recognition system in another contract announced that summer.
