The United Arab Emirates will soon see its border security bolstered thanks to a new contract that will see Morpho (Safran) providing fingerprint, voice and face recognition technology through an e-Border project.
Morpho received the contract (which was awarded through the UAE Ministry of Interior) through eIMASS. The project will see the implementation of a border control system featuring fully integrated biometrics. In all, 96 eGates and 94 e-Counters will be deployed across five major UAE airports starting with Abu Dhabi airport this spring.
The company is no stranger to the region. Morpho already supplies security systems to Abu Dhabi Police, Emirates Identity Authority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abu Dhabi Airports Company and the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority as well as other agencies and organizations. This history has positioned Morpho as an ideal solutions provider in the new border control project.
“Morpho has the proven technology and local expertise which enable them to fully understand our needs and expectations for the e-Border project,” says Major General Dr. Ahmed Naser Al Raisi, Abu Dhabi Police’s director general central operations. “We have every confidence in their ability to successfully support us in one of most important of our nation-wide projects.”
The border control system is fully automated thanks to the MorphoWay eGates that will be used in the implementation. Adding to the convenience of the situation will be the company’s extremely fast Finger-on-the-Fly technology which is designed for fingerprint matching in high throughput environments. The same goes for Morpho’s Iris-at-a-Distance cameras which offer simultaneous face and iris capture in less than a second.
The new system will expand upon the previously implemented e-Border pilot from 2012.
According to Morpho chairman and CEO Philippe Petitcolin, “This contract solidifies our long-standing working relationship with the police and border authorities of the UAE. We believe that our partnership is a truly winning combination, and one that will make a positive contribution to the future of border control in the UAE.”
The global border control markets are forecasted to boom over the next five years thanks to all of the aspects that make the e-Border project so appealing. A strong demand for convenience and high level security exists in the border control markets and biometric technologies, particularly those that feature contactless high speed matching (like those Morpho will be implementing in this newest contract) present the ideal solution.
