In June 2013, Morpho (Safran) launched a trial of its next generation automated border control solution SmartGate Plus, at the Auckland International Airport. Now, the biometric technology based system will be tested by New Zealand Customs service (NZCS) during an operational trial that will see over 2000 passengers per week pass through the SmartGate Plus.
Using facial recognition technology that compares images of the passenger to the data contained in an e-Passport chip, the original SmartGate has been used to great success by New Zealand’s Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch airports since 2009. More than 70 percent of travelers eligible to use the system currently do, with over six million travelers having used SmartGate.
Speaking to the success of SmartGate, NZCS’s Geoff Wilson said, “The biometric self-processing technology has streamlined passenger processing and provided a secure, efficient way to clear passport control and we are pleased to be involved in testing the next generation SmartGate Plus.”
The next generation entry in the Morpho series of e-gate solutions makes everything faster and more convenient. The SmartGate Plus is kiosk and ticket free, using e-gates equipped with Morpho’s latest biometric matching software and workflow capabilities, with future options for the addition of fingerprint and iris recognition features.
SmartGate Plus stands to further simplify and expedite border control in Australasia, according to Bruno Pattyn, directing manager of Morpho’s subsidiary in the region. “SmartGate Plus is a clear reflection of our collaborative approach with New Zealand Customs to create, build and deploy the next generation in border control solutions”
