On Track Innovations subsidiary OTI PetroSmart has received a major order of its MediSmart cards from Kenya-based Smart Applications International.
The smart cards use fingerprint biometrics to authenticate users’ identities, and are used to enable access to medical services from participating providers, with their NFC capabilities enabling easy and convenient authentication transactions. And given that Smart Applications International has already installed OTI’s NFC readers at over 3,000 locations in East Africa, the MediSmart card order seems a natural progression.
Commenting in a statement, OTI PetroSmart Managing Director Charlotte Hambly-Nuss asserted that her company’s staff “continue to be encouraged with the rapid expansion of the MediSmart solution across East Africa,” adding that the end of Q1 saw over a million MediSmart cards in circulation in the region.
It appears to be a growing market marked by enthusiasm for biometric solutions on the part of government, at least in Kenya, whose government announced plans for a biometric citizen registry back in 2014, and unveiled further plans for a biometric social services distribution system in February of 2015.
