Authorities in Brazil’s Mato Grosso state are testing out biometric technology in criminal hearings.
The aim is to improve the identification process for individuals caught in the country’s summary hearing process, which is designed to bring criminals caught in the act before a judge within 24 hours of the crime. Previously, such persons were identified through biographic details, but the Mato Grosso State Court of Justice is now trialing technology from Vision-Box to add biometric identification to the process.
Authorities are using the vb e-pass portable, which lets authorities immediately collect facial and fingerprint biometrics, as well as digital signatures, and to collate that data with biographic information. The resulting profile is submitted to criminal databases, and is used to identify the subject in court.
While Vision-Box has lately seen a rising profile largely thanks to its border screening deployments, the Mato Gross project points to the versatility of the company’s biometric technology. And the company has worked closely with state authorities to develop a solution that could be expanded to other states in the country, as well, so it could have a significant impact in Brazil’s legal system going forward.
