Lenovo is using Synaptics fingerprint sensors in its latest convertible laptop. Called the Yoga 910, the device features Synaptics’ Natural ID technology, as well as the latter company’s ClearPad and ClickPad user interface solutions.
The integration brings FIDO Alliance standards to the device, as Synaptics’ Natural ID sensor is FIDO Certified, ensuring a high level of security in user authentication. And that biometric authentication capability is essentially built into the device via its use of Windows Hello, the biometric security platform of the Windows 10 operating system.
Commenting in a statement, Lenovo SVP Johnson Jia proclaimed that the “Yoga 910 offers enhanced biometric authentication for consumer PCs, and we’re excited to partner with Synaptics to help our customers move away from pins and passwords to stronger authentication using enterprise-grade biometric sensors.”
The convertible laptop’s incorporation of an embedded fingerprint sensor may point to an emerging trend as more hardware OEMs seek to leverage the biometric capabilities of software like Windows Hello. Meanwhile, third party solutions like BIO-key’s USB fingerprint scanners offer users the same opportunity even if their devices don’t support biometrics out of the box.
