Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc. has received Lenel certification for its line of PalmEntry biometric scanners, and it has joined the Lenel OpenAccess Alliance Program. This means that Fujitsu’s PalmEntry scanners can be used with Lenel’s OnGuard security platform, opening up a lot of new market opportunities for the company.
Fujitsu has been pretty active lately in developing its biometric technology. Earlier this year it was shopping around its PalmSecure technology – which the PalmEntry systems are based on – to casinos at the Global Gaming Expo, and more recently it filed a number of patents related to biometric technology. But it’s in the area of palm vein technology in particular where the company has really invested its effort, and that investment is now set to pay off the Lenel partnership.
Speaking in a press release, Fujitsu’s VP of currency handling and identity product solutions, Randy Fox, asserted that Fujitsu’s “ability to interface PalmEntry and PalmEntryXS technology to Lenel’s OnGuard platform is extremely important because it will enable enrollment for individuals who cannot enroll with other biometric sensors such as fingerprint readers, because they have dry skin, use lotions, or their fingerprints may be ‘washed out’ due to their line of work,” noting that the PalmSecure technology relies on subcutaneous veins and is thus not impacted by surface issues. It’s a pretty solid angle to play in the booming market of biometric identity authentication, and the partnership looks set to be a win-win for Fujitsu and Lenel.
