Kensington Announces FIDO-Compliant Key Designed for Windows 10

California-based desktop and mobile accessory maker Kensington has announced a new second-factor authentication key with a built-in fingerprint sensor. Called the VeriMark Fingerprint Key, the solution was launched at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The device is designed to work with Windows Hello, the biometric security system built into Windows 10; as such, it will compete against other emerging devices like BIO-key’s fingerprint-scanning USB devices, which are also designed for Windows Hello compatibility. Kensington’s solution is also compliant with FIDO standards, and the company says it features built-in anti-spoofing technology, though it has not specified the mechanism by which it operates.

The VeriMark Fingerprint Key’s biometric capabilities come by way of Synaptics and its Natural ID line of fingerprint sensors; in a statement announcing the device, Kensington called it “the smallest size touch sensor available”.

With U2F/2FA security now enjoying the support of prominent backers like Google, Kensington’s solution arrives at a time of heightened interest in these kinds of solutions. Kensington will be showing off the system alongside its new Laptop Locking Station 2.0 solution throughout CES.
