Apple says its newest iPhones are likely going to beat the first-weekend sales numbers of its previous devices. Company spokesperson Trudy Muller says that, given the interest the company has seen since its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus became available for preorder on Saturday, they are “on pace” to exceed the 10 million units sold in the first weekend debt of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
While more substantial change is anticipated for next year’s iPhone 7, these newest devices sport incremental change. There are upgrades to processor and camera, and the devices will also feature second-generation Touch ID fingerprint scanning, a faster version of the biometric system that pioneered the now commonplace integration of fingerprint sensors into high-end smartphones. Adding to the devices’ biometric capabilities will be what Apple is now calling 3D Touch, a pressure-sensing system built into the touchscreen that allows finer manipulation on the part of the user; it’s very similar to the Force Touch technology of Huawei’s new Mate S device.
The new iPhones’ rollout appears likely to proceed much more smoothly than that of the Apple Watch, which had a much more drawn-out release as Apple adopted a cautious approach with the novel device (and possibly due to hardware defects). The iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus are going to start shipping on September 25th.
