IDEX has announced a new addition to its line of large-area sensor solutions with a flexible sensor aimed at card applications.
The sensor offers a sensing area of 13 x 13 mm, and features an ASIC designed for efficient use energy. It’s designed for use in both contact-based and contactless cards, and IDEX says it’s compliant with ISO standards concerning “the physical characteristics of a biometric system-on-card,” according to a statement announcing the solution.
Elaborating on the solution’s value proposition, IDEX CPO Stan Swearingen explained that “sensor solutions for biometric card applications must work within very tight power, processing and memory constraints and also do not have a screen to give simple user feedback during the enrolment process.” Thus, large-area sensors offer a solution “to get enrolment to be really fast and accurate,” Swearingen said.
It’s the latest indication of IDEX’s focus on the emerging biometric smart cards market, with the company having indicated in a recent investor update that it aims to attain marketshare upwards of 30 percent in 2020, thanks in large part to its affiliation with Mastercard, which is expected to be a champion of the market. This latest development comes on the heels of IDEX’s announcement of a new biometric enrollment solution for smart cards at the end of last month.
