IDEX ASA Receives First Order for Off-Chip Sensor

Norway-based fingerprint biometrics developer IDEX ASA has received its first order for its flagship off-chip sensor product, the company has announced. The order comes from World Wide Touch Technology Holding Ltd. (WWTT), a customer that had previously ordered the company’s first-generation silicon sensors.

IDEX hasn’t disclosed the value of the order, but in a press release the company said that it “strongly validates the advantages of IDEX’s patented flexible sensor technology,” and notes that other major OEMs “are actively trialing the products and are giving very positive feedback.” The company is also working to fast-track trials of an in-glass version of its off-chip sensor, which it says offers higher-quality images than sensor placed under a device’s glass screen.

At the same time, the company is also exploring applications of its off-chip sensor technology in biometric smart cards, which could really take advantage of the thinness and flexibility offered by IDEX’s solution. The company is currently working with a global payments company in this area as part of a partnership first announced in June of this year.

All of this accords with the overall strategy outlined by the company in a mid-year update issued last month, in which it laid out its aim to take a “significant share of the multi-billion dollar market for fingerprint sensors.”
