“…while Mastercard hasn’t set a launch date for Australia, its arrival appears to be imminent.”
Mastercard is bringing its Identity Check platform to Australia, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. The company made its announcement at the recent Australian Open.
The app is also known as ‘Selfie Pay’, but it isn’t a mobile payment platform. It is, rather, an optional biometric authentication system that can be used to add extra security to online purchases. Users who decide to take advantage of the app will be prompted by their smartphones to either scan their faces using the smartphone camera – taking a selfie, in other words, while also blinking to prove you’re not a static image – or scan their fingerprints, if their smartphones have fingerprint sensors.
The system was developed by Daon, and Mastercard started rolling it out with BMO in North America last spring. The app was most recently launched in Brazil and Mexico, and while Mastercard hasn’t set a launch date for Australia, its arrival appears to be imminent.
