The Colombian government has contracted IDEMIA to upgrade its civil identity program, the latter has announced.
It’s a continuation of a longstanding relationship. In a statement announcing the new contract with the National Civil Registry of Colombia (Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil de Colombia, or RNEC), IDEMIA asserted that it “has worked with the RNEC since the beginning of this project and has constantly supported the successive improvements of the solution.” That previous work was performed by Safran Identity & Security, before the organization merged with Oberthur Technologies earlier this year to form OT-Morpho, which has just officially rebranded as IDEMIA.
As for the work to come, IDEMIA says it will perform “technological and functional upgrades” to the program, including “an additional biometric security feature using facial recognition”.
Commenting on the contract, RNEC National Registrar Juan Carlos Galindo asserted that the country’s national identity program has been in place for twenty years, adding, “We have trusted IDEMIA from the beginning to help us achieve our ambitions and we renew our trust today in IDEMIA to take this platform to an even better level of service.”
